Large reptiles with powerful tails used for swimming and as a weapon, alligators are a primeval apex predator that has existed long before humanity. Their sensory organs, eyes, ears, nostrils, are on the top of their heads, allowing the alligator to rest almost completely submerged below the water. The alligator’s powerful jaw is notable for its overbite and locking tooth that fits into the maw. Preferring lakes, swamps or rivers, alligators may burrows in which they rest and avoid weather extremes. Long lived, and extremely tough, alligators can live fifty to seventy years on average, with some living as long as one hundred and twenty years.
Depending on region, alligators range from green, to brown, or black. They can grow to between one and a half to four meters long, and weigh between twenty five and five hundred kilograms depending on breed. Their rough leather scales have evolved to look like wood. Their mouths hold up to eighty teeth which as they grind down are replaced. The alligator’s bite is one of the strongest in the world measuring over sixteen thousand newtons of force, as compared to a human with a mere five hundred newtons, and on par with a rocket engine. Their tails are almost entirely muscle and can be used as a weapon.
