While the Blacktip Shark and Spiny Dogfish are more common in North America, we’re talking sharks, so let’s pull out the big boys, it’s time to talk about the great white. Sure the whale and basking sharks are larger, but I don’t think anyone is tuning in for plankton feeders. Male great whites can grow up to 4 meters (13 feet) in size, the female of the species however can reach 6 meters or more (over 20 feet). Great whites prefer cooler waters between 12 and 24 °C (54 and 75 °F). As an apex predator, great whites help to cull the larger seal popular along with their regular diet of… well virtually anything.
Ambush predators with an amazing sense of smell, great whites can detect prey from miles away preferring to shoot up taking their prey by surprise. Attacking with seven rows of sharp teeth, the shark will grind from side to side sawing larger prey in a gruesome meal. A shark’s skin is composed of thousands of tiny overlapping scales with the same structural consistency as their teeth. While not nearly as lethal, brushing against a shark can result in painful lacerations. In addition to these deadly adaptations, sharks are naturally curious animals, constantly exploring their surroundings. This has led t o them swimming alongside boats even making eye contact with people.
