Found throughout the ocean, there are approximately three-hundred recognized species of octopus. These soft bodied, eight limbed creatures range in size from two and a half centimeters to ten meters. Of course, given their ability to survive in extreme environments there could be smaller, or larger species of octopus that have yet to be discovered.
Octopuses demonstrate the ability to problem solve, navigate mazes or use tools to overcome obstacles. This is in addition to a strong memory and ability to recognize and remember people, places, or events. More so, roughly two thirds of all octopus possess neurons in their arms allowing them to act independently or together to overcome challenges. However, this is just part of the suite of abilities at the disposal of an octopus.
Their distributed brain, three hearts, and soft body helps them to survive bodily trauma. An octopus can survive and remain mobile out of water. Perhaps more impressive than a chameleon, an octopus can change skin color and pattern to become nearly invisible. If that doesn’t work, they have ink to blind predators. Finally, their bite is venomous, often paralytic, but occasionally deadly, even to humans.
