There was only one way this series was going to end and I think we all knew this from the start. Let’s talk turtles. Ranging in size from just under four inches to over eight feet, there are over 300 known species of turtle. Most pet turtles tend to be under a foot though, depending on the type. Characterized by their hard shell, and limbs that can be pulled in for protection, they are a popular pet after some of the more expected options and a fun introductory reptile.
At over 200 million years old, turtles predate alligators and snakes in the reptile world. It’s not just their lineage that is long lived either. There are turtles with documented ages over 180 years. Their shell, or carapace, is part of a modified ribcage and is covered in keratin scutes. As it is part of their body, the shell grows along with the turtle, and despite popular belief, a turtle cannot come out of its shell.
